Experiential Learning Initiative: Africa (ELI Africa; formerly HOPE Global Initiative) is looking for enthusiastic, dedicated Yalies to lead hands-on learning projects and community-building programs for underprivileged youth in Mauritius this summer. Participants (Fellows) will work as a team and with local educators to run targeted creative projects in sustainable agriculture, health/fitness, IT and creative arts, and to establish links between kids and members of the local community. As part of our pilot program, Fellows will also have the opportunity to shape the future of ELI Africa and to develop long-term strategy and initiatives.

While Mauritius is to many a high-end tourist destination owing its popularity to its fair climate and vast sandy beaches, the other side of the coin rarely gets reported. Extreme poverty, a rising HIV rate, and low educational opportunities are a reality for many children in Mauritius. ELI Africa works with orphans and with children who have fallen out of the main education system to create sustainable learning solutions in areas of practical knowledge, and to help them reach their full potential and broaden their horizons.
Program Dates:The program runs for two months in the summer from June 1 until July 31, 2010.
Funding:We will provide a significant stipend for pre- arranged housing, local transportation and all project resources; applicants should expect to pay for their own airfare, food, a small portion of housing, and personal effects (cell phone, etc).
