THE PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA OF YALE, the orchestra of the Yale University School of Music, will perform in Carnegie Hall on Sunday, April 30, 2006 at 8:00 pm. All the performers in the orchestra-and in the School of Music - are graduate-level concert artists who have come to Yale after graduating from the world's major conservatories and universities, such as the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute, the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music in London, Korea's major music schools, and the Paris, Beijing, and New England conservatories. The program -- "New Era Dance" by Pulitzer prize-winning faculty composer and Yale alumnus Aaron Jay Kernis Cello Concerto No. 1 by Dmitri Shostakovich with soloist Jian Wang '88, who came to the world's attention in 1979 as the 10-year-old cello prodigy in the documentary "Mao to Mozart," and who has since performed and recorded with the most renowned international orchestras and conductors. Symphony No. 2 by, Jean Sibelius Written in 1902, this beautiful work is the most popular and most recorded of all the symphonies by the great Finnish master. The conductor for the program is Shinik Hahm who, before becoming music director of the orchestra in 2004, was director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra for a decade. Hahm is also music director of the Daejeon Philharmonic in Korea, and has served as director of the Abilene and Green Bay Symphony Orchestras in this country.
