Since President Kennedy started the Peace Corps in 1961, nearly 1,000 Yale alumni have served all over the world in a variety of assignments through the Peace Corps. Three simple goals comprise the Peace Corps' mission: 1.Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their needs for trained men and women 2.Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served 3.Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of all Americans. Peace Corps Volunteers work for 27 months in to address community-identified needs in the following assignments; English/Math/Science Teaching, Special Education, Primary/Secondary Teacher Training, University Teaching, Health Extension, Public Health, Environmental Education, Forestry, Protected Areas Management, Environmental Engineering, Business Development, NGO-Advising, Information and Communication Technology, Agriculture, Agribusiness, Animal Husbandry, Urban and Regional Planning and more. Peace Corps Volunteers receive full medical/dental coverage, $6,075 in readjustment allowance, 1 year of non-competitive eligibility status for federal jobs following service, 3 months of in-country pre-service language/cultural/technical training, potential student loan deferment and/or cancellation and potential graduate school credit or reduced tuition.
