The New Haven Science Fair Program needs you!

The New Haven Science Fair Program is dedicated to improving the quality of education, and particularly science education in the New Haven Public Schools for grades pre-K through 12.  It began in 1995 with seven test schools but has grown to include more than 7,000 New Haven students in 33 schools.  In 2009 the Science Fair Program utilized more than 160 volunteers to mentor students and judge projects.

How can you help?  Mentors work with teachers and students to guide them in exploring science questions and designing experiments to test their hypotheses.  Last year approximately 40 of the 65 Science Fair mentors were from Yale and we are hoping to provide the same level of commitment this year! 

Mentors are matched based on location, preferred age group, availability and area of expertise.  They commit to working with students for about an hour-an-a-half per week (typically in the afternoons) over a period of several months between October and May.  There are also a few volunteer opportunities for those who cannot make a weekly commitment and I encourage you to contact me or Cathy (info below) about them.
